Have a pound of ground beef but no burger buns? You don’t need buns to make a delicious dinner with this recipe for burger bowls!

I rarely buy buns because we struggle to eat a whole package before they go bad. So instead of making traditional hamburgers, we make grilled beef burger bowls when we feel like making an easy meal with ground beef.

Why You’ll Love These Grilled Burger Bowls

    • They’re so easy to make. Just grill the burger patties, bake the sweet potato fries and cut up some veggies.
    • They’re heavy on the vegetables. You’re not limited to a couple pieces of lettuce and a single tomato slice by a bun. You can fill your bowl with lots of fresh produce!
    • They’re family friendly. These bowls are so easy to customize with any toppings your family likes, and they’re easy for kids to enjoy.
    • Everything is better in a bowl.

How To Make Grilled Burger Bowls

    1. Form the burger patties. Shape the ground beef into 4 uniform patties, taking care not to over-work the beef. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and steak seasoning (if using) on both sides. Place patties in the refrigerator until you’re ready to grill.
    2. To make grilled onions (optional but recommended!), thinly slice an onion and toss in oil. Spread onto a piece of foil or into a grill basket.
    3. Wash lettuce, slice tomatoes and avocado, and prepare any other vegetables you’d like to use.
    4. Heat the grill to medium heat. Grill burgers 8-10 minutes, flipping once halfway through until cooked through. Add cheese to the top of burgers during the last minute of cooking (if using). Grill onions on the top rack of the grill.
    5. Prepare sweet potato fries according to package directions while burgers cook.
    6. To build bowls, full each bowl with lettuce and top with burger patties. Add vegetables and sweet potato fries, and serve with mustard, ketchup or sauce of your choice!

Tips for Making Delicious Burger Bowls

    • Handle the beef as little as possible when shaping patties to keep the burgers tender and juicy.
    • Keep the beef cold before grilling to help the patties keep their shape on the grill.
    • No grill? You can cook the beef burgers in a skillet on the stove over medium heat.

    Recipe Variations

    Make these burgers your own!

    • For a low-carb bowl, feel free to leave off the sweet potato fries.
    • If you’d rather use regular fries or tater tots, go for it! You can also make my grilled sweet potato wedges if you’d rather not turn on the oven.
    • Switch up the greens to suit your taste. Try spinach, kale or arugula in place of lettuce!
    • Get as creative as you want with toppings. Try grilled mushrooms or peppers, guacamole, or your favorite dressing.
    • We’ve even made these topped with a fried egg - it’s delicious!

    • Category: main dish
    • Method: grilled
    • Cuisine: American

    Ingredients

    Scale

    For the Burgers:

    • 1 lb. Ground Beef (I like 80/20 or 85/15 for burgers)
    • Kosher salt
    • Black pepper
    • Steak seasoning
    • 1 med onion, sliced ¼ inch thick
    • ½ tsp olive oil
    • 4 slices cheddar or other cheese (optional)

    For the Bowls:

    • Lettuce of choice (I like butter lettuce or romaine)
    • Cherry tomatoes or sliced tomato
    • Dill pickles
    • Avocado, sliced
    • 1 (15 oz) package baked frozen sweet potato fries
    • Ketchup, mustard or other favorite condiments

    Instructions

    1. Divide ground beef into 4 portions and shape each into a 1-inch thick patty. Handle the meat as little as possible for the juiciest burgers. Season each patty with salt, pepper, and steak seasoning on both sides. Refrigerate patties until ready to grill.
    2. Thinly slice an onion and toss in oil. Spread onto a piece of foil or into a grill basket.
    3. Heat grill to medium heat. Place onion on the grill over indirect heat, stirring occasionally. Grill burgers 8-10 minutes over direct heat, flipping once halfway through. They are done when the internal temperature reaches 160°F. Top burgers with cheese (if using) during the last 1-2 minutes of grilling.
    4. While burgers cook, cook the sweet potato fries according to package directions and cut veggies for the bowls.
    5. Once burgers are done, assemble bowls. Start with a bed of lettuce in each of 4 bowls, then add a beef burger patty to each. Top each bowl as desired with tomatoes, pickles, grilled onions, avocado, and sweet potato fries.

    Notes

    • Handle the beef as little as possible when shaping patties to keep the burgers tender and juicy.
    • Keep the beef cold before grilling to help the patties keep their shape on the grill.
