This easy homemade Greek salad dressing is the BEST healthy dressing for pasta salads, Greek salads, marinades, and more! You'll love this traditional Greek dressing made with real, simple ingredients like olive oil, red wine vinegar, garlic, and oregano.
If you've ever eaten a Greek salad, then you know the deliciousness that is Greek dressing. And I assume you have if you're reading this post. If not, get on it, and welcome to your new addiction.
Why You'll Love This Homemade Greek Salad Dressing Recipe
I love any and all Mediterranean food, and this multipurpose Greek dressing is a staple when I'm preparing Mediterranean-inspired meals. It's easy to make with just a few simple ingredients that you likely already have on hand, it's flavorful, and it's healthy. I think this will become your new favorite Greek dressing too.
What Is In Greek Salad Dressing?
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil - I like a bold, flavorful one
- Red Wine Vinegar - This gives Greek dressing it's classic taste
- Lemon Juice
- Dijon Mustard - For emulsification and thickening purposes, as well as flavor
- Fresh Garlic
- Spices - Oregano, Basil, Onion Powder, Salt and Pepper
- Optional Feta Cheese - I love feta in my Greek dressing for a little extra savory flavor, but I know some people don't, so it's optional here.
Why Is Greek Dressing Sometimes Pink?
Since red wine vinegar is the base of Greek dressing, it will sometimes turn pink, especially if it has white feta cheese in it.
Is Greek Dressing Healthy?
It's my expert opinion that all homemade dressings are healthier than store-bought because they're free from preservatives, typically lower in sodium and sugar, and made completely from high quality oils (versus mainly canola or soybean oil). This homemade Greek dressing is even more on the nutritious side because it doesn't contain any sweeteners and is loaded with heart-healthy olive oil.
How To Make Greek Salad Dressing
This dressing is super simple to make. Simply mince some garlic, squeeze some lemon juice, and mix everything together in a jar. You can get fancy and use one of those dressing shakers if you'd like, but a mason jar also does the job just fine.
Tips For Making The BEST Greek Dressing
- Make sure you use a good quality olive oil as the base of your dressing.
- If you prefer a more emulsified dressing, use a food processor or blender to mix the ingredients. Just whisking or shaking the ingredients in the jar won't completely emulsify the dressing, so it will separate easily.
- If you prefer, you can substitute ¾ teaspoon garlic powder for the fresh garlic.
How Long Will This Dressing Last?
Greek dressing will last up to at least a week in the refrigerator in a sealed container. If you plan to store it for a while, I'd use garlic powder instead of fresh garlic, since fresh garlic tends to become overpowering if it sits a while.
What To Do With Greek Dressing
Besides the obvious Greek salad, here are a few ways to use homemade Greek dressing:
- In pasta salad, like my Greek Orzo Pasta Salad
- As a marinade for chicken, lamb, or fish
- For dipping veggies
- In a sandwich
- Tossed with leafy greens for a quick side salad
