This patriotic red white and blue sangria with white wine and berries is a fun and festive cocktail for the 4th of July and other patriotic holidays. It is make ahead-friendly and great for a crowd!
Independence Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. I love spending the day celebrating America with my family, eating BBQ and twirling sparklers through the air. A festive red, white and blue sangria is always appropriate for celebrating patriotic holidays throughout the summer - and goes perfectly with a side of freedom!
Why You'll Love This Sangria
If you want to celebrate with a patriotic themed cocktail, but don't want the bright food dyes, this sangria is perfect for you! It uses naturally colored berries and apples to create a red, white and blue scheme. It is light and refreshing, and easy to make with just a few simple ingredients. Mix it up ahead of the party so that the drinks are taken care of before the guests ever arrive. Once you finish your drink, you get to enjoy the juicy, boozy fruit at the bottom of your glass!
The Ingredients
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Apples
- White wine
- Peach liqueur - You could also use an orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier or Cointreau
- Sparkling water or club soda
What Is The Best Wine For Sangria?
For this sangria, I like a dry, crisp white wine, such as Pinot Grigio. No need to use a super expensive bottle of wine, but make sure it's something you enjoy drinking on its own. If you like a sweeter sangria, use a sweeter white wine, such as Moscato.
How To Make Red White and Blue Sangria
- Slice the apples thinly up-and-down (stem end to blossom end). Use a small star-shaped cookie cutter to cut stars in the apple slices, discarding any seeds.
- Place the blueberries, sliced strawberries and apples in a pitcher.
- Add the white wine and peach liqueur. Stir and refrigerate until you're ready to serve. You'll want to let the fruit marinate for at least an hour, but you can leave it overnight.
- When you're ready to serve, stir in the club soda or sparkling water. Pour over ice and enjoy!
Tip: For festive ice, freeze red and blue berries in ice cube trays with water!
Can It Be Made Ahead?
Yes! Sangria is best made ahead so that the fruit can soak up the booze and the flavors can mingle. Ideally, you want to make it at least 1-2 hours in advance, but overnight is also just fine. Add the soda or sparkling water just before serving so that it doesn't go flat.
