Give your immune system a little boost this cold and flu season with a tasty, nutrient-packed honey turmeric vitamin C shot. It’s easy to make with simple kitchen ingredients and tastes way better than a supplement!

This post is sponsored by the Florida Department of Citrus. As always, all opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that keep Lively Table running!

Guys. This cold and flu season has been brutal. Our family has not been able to shake the congestions and runny noses for the past few months. Ever since Queen C started Parent’s Day Out this past fall, it’s been a battle to keep her well (and to keep her germs away from us!) as her little body tries to figure out how to fight off all the germs she comes into contact with around other small kids.

Needless to say, all of our immune systems need a little help this year fighting off the colds. Mama does NOT have time to be sick! We have been desperate to do anything to stay well, which is why I’ve been stocking up on Florida Orange Juice and drinking this immune-boosting Orange Juice Honey Turmeric Vitamin C Shot.

Why Florida Orange Juice?

Simple. 100% orange juice provides essential immune-supporting nutrients that the body needs regularly to stay well, including vitamin C, folate, potassium, thiamin, and vitamin D (if your juice is fortified). Including these nutrients in your everyday diet is important for supporting your immune system during cold and flu season and year-round. Hydration is also key for staying healthy and for getting better when you are sick, and Florida Orange Juice, with 90% water and natural electrolytes, is a great source of hydration. Finally, Florida Orange Juice provides a unique antioxidant called hesperidin that may help improve immune function.

How Does Vitamin C Support the Immune System?

Vitamin C is an important vitamin that acts as an antioxidant in the body, protecting cells and aiding in the production and function of white blood cells that fight off inflammation and infection.1

Why Not Just Take a Supplement?

You guys know I’m all about a food-first approach. I always recommend trying to get essential nutrients from real food before reaching for supplements. For one thing real food tastes way better! Enjoying this tasty vitamin C shot made with real Florida Orange Juice, honey, and spices is so much better than choking down a powder from a packet. It’s also much more cost-effective, and I can control the ingredients. It’s important to remember that supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA, so you can’t always be certain exactly what is in them. Luckily, it’s easy to get all the vitamin C you need from real food sources, like 100% orange juice, without reaching for a supplement. For example, one 8-ounce glass of orange juice provides 120% of your recommended Daily Value of vitamin C.

Why You’ll Love This Honey Turmeric Vitamin C Shot

Not only does this tasty shot contain all of the benefits of Florida Orange Juice, it’s also made with other ingredients to support your immune system:

  • Honey - Honey has antibacterial properties, especially raw and Manuka honeys, and honey may also decrease severity and duration of coughs.2-4
  • Turmeric - Turmeric contains a powerful compound called curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In this recipe, black pepper helps aid in absorption.5
  • Ginger - Ginger also contains anti-inflammatory compounds, as well as antiviral and antibacterial properties.6-8

Whipping up one of these immunity supporting drinks is almost as easy as pouring a powder from a packet (especially if you make a big batch at once), and it’s much more cost-effective than a supplement. These shots are also so refreshing, and a delicious little boost for starting your day!

How to Make Honey Turmeric Vitamin C Shots

These tasty shots are super easy to make!

  1. Grate the turmeric and ginger. I like to use a microplane zester for super fine pieces.
  2. Add the honey, turmeric, ginger and pepper to a glass. Carefully add hot water (not boiling) and stir until the honey is dissolved.
  3. Mix in Florida Orange Juice and enjoy.

Vitamin C Shot-Making Tips:

  • You can substitute ginger powder and turmeric powder for fresh, if you’d like, using ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric and ⅛ teaspoon ground ginger per shot.
  • I use manuka honey, but any honey will work here.
  • If you’d like to make multiple shots at a time, mix 4 teaspoon honey, 4 teaspoon grated turmeric, 1 teaspoon grated ginger, ¼ teaspoon black pepper, ¼ cup hot water, and 2 cups orange juice. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator and drink one shot daily.
  • Use gloves when grating the turmeric to prevent staining your hands. To remove turmeric stains from my hands, I usually rub them with lemon juice and then wash with soap.

      Hi Elaine,

No, the turmeric will not stain teeth. Oddly enough, turmeric stains everything BUT teeth - it's actually used as a whitener!
