With cherries starting to pop up at the farmer's market and in grocery stores, it's time to take full advantage of the dark, sweet gems. I used to not like cherries as a kid, but now I can't get enough of juicy sweet cherries when they come into season. If you love cherries as much as I do, you'll love this simple recipe (that's admittedly not really a recipe, more of an idea) for cherry yogurt parfaits!

Why You'll Love This Cherry Almond Parfait Recipe

This recipes is everything you want in a parfait - it's incredibly simple (because even the fanciest of fruit and yogurt meals need to be no-fuss), it has the perfect ratio of crunchy-creamy-sweet, and it's super nutritious. It's not so sugary that it teeters into dessert territory, though you could certainly make it dessert if you'd like! Cherries and almonds are a match made it heaven, though you can feel free to experiment with the layers to suit your preference (and what's on hand).

Is It Healthy?

When I make a yogurt parfait, I want it to be a filling and satisfying breakfast or snack that isn't too sweet - and that's exactly what this is. Plain Greek yogurt is a great source of protein without added sugar - the cherries are sweet enough! Granola, almonds and cherries bring a mix of fiber and healthy fat, making this a perfectly balanced recipe, nutritionally speaking. Cherries also provide several beneficial polyphenols which act as antioxidants, protecting the body from oxidative stress and inflammation and lowering blood pressure.

The Ingredients

  • Plain Greek yogurt - I like 2% or whole milk Greek yogurt for the thickest, creamiest texture.
  • Dark sweet cherries - If it's not cherry season, you can use frozen cherries that have been thawed.
  • Granola - Choose a lower sugar granola, (in a honey-almond flavor if you want to lean into the almond theme). If you want to make it yourself, try my Honey Almond Quinoa Granola recipe.
  • Almonds - Use raw, unsalted almonds. Choose pre-sliced almonds for ease!

How To Make It

Not that I need to tell you. But here's how to make a pretty cherry almond parfait:

  1. Add cherries to the bottom of a glass or jar.
  2. Layer with yogurt and sprinkle with granola and almonds.
  3. Repeat the layers.
  4. Dig in!

If you are in a hurry, you can certainly skip the layering and make a yogurt bowl by simply throwing everything into a bowl. No judgement!

Make It Your Own With These Variations

  • Use frozen or dried cherries, or add other stone fruit, such as peaches, plums or apricots.
  • For more of a dessert parfait, add some dark chocolate and/or use vanilla Greek yogurt.
  • Switch up the flavor of the granola! Try my Chocolate Hazelnut Granola or Coconut Tahini Granola.
  • Fora grain free (and gluten-free) version, omit the granola and use a mix of nuts and seeds.
