This Sweet Potato Casserole Is the First Side Dish I’d Bring Back for Fall

Sweet potatoes start showing up on fall tables long before Thanksgiving, and this casserole gives them a reason to return as soon as the season changes. Mashed sweet potatoes form the base, cinnamon and nutmeg bring in the fall spices, and a pecan topping adds crunch across the surface.

There is one change from many classic versions. Instead of heavy cream, the sweet potato mixture gets Greek yogurt. It adds creaminess along with a slight tang that works against the brown sugar rather than adding another rich ingredient to an already sweet dish.

No marshmallow topping is required. Pecans, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour bake into a crisp layer that contrasts with the soft filling underneath.

Greek Yogurt Goes Into the Sweet Potato Filling

Peel three large sweet potatoes, cut them into cubes, and boil them until a fork passes through without resistance. Drain them well before mashing so excess water doesn't loosen the casserole.

Mix in half a cup of Greek yogurt, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla. Two beaten eggs help the mixture set as it bakes.

Greek yogurt changes more than the ingredient list. Its acidity balances the brown sugar and sweet potatoes, while its thick texture gives the filling body without heavy cream.

    Pecans Replace the Marshmallow Topping

Instead of covering the casserole with marshmallows, this version uses a pecan crumble. Chop the pecans, then combine them with butter, flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon.

Spread the mixture across the sweet potato base before baking. The nuts toast in the oven while the sugar and butter form a crisp topping, giving each serving a mix of soft sweet potato and pecan crunch.

Marshmallows can still be added for a sweeter version, but the casserole doesn't depend on them.

Cinnamon and Nutmeg Push It Into Fall

Sweet potatoes already have enough natural sweetness to work with warm spices. Cinnamon and nutmeg go into the filling, while another dose of cinnamon seasons the pecan topping.

Vanilla rounds out the mixture without turning it into dessert. Brown sugar appears in both layers, so each serving gets sweetness from the filling and the baked topping rather than from one thick layer of sugar on top.

Give It Time to Set After Baking

Bake the assembled casserole at 375°F for about 30 minutes. It can be served hot, but cooling changes the texture. As the casserole sits, the sweet potato filling firms and becomes easier to portion.

For an even firmer texture, let it reach room temperature and refrigerate it for about an hour before serving. Leftovers can be kept in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to seven days.

Thanksgiving may be the meal most associated with sweet potato casserole, but there is no reason to wait that long. Sweet potatoes, pecans, cinnamon, and nutmeg put this one firmly into fall territory as soon as cooler-weather cooking returns.
