The Ingredient You Squeeze Over Food Can Go Into Your Morning Drink Too

Lemon juice tends to come out for salad dressings, fish, vegetables, and sauces, but a small amount can also go into a cup of tea or coffee. It adds a sharp citrus note while contributing some vitamin C.

The combination works best when the lemon suits the drink itself. Black tea and herbal tea are natural places to start, while lemon in coffee creates a stronger contrast that may not suit every cup.

Add Lemon After Making the Drink

Prepare the tea or coffee first, then add about a teaspoon of lemon juice. Bottled lemon juice works, or juice can be squeezed from a fresh lemon.

Taste the drink before adding more. Lemon brings enough acidity that a small amount can change the cup without turning it into a lemon drink.

Black and Herbal Teas Make an Easy Match

Black tea already has enough bitterness and depth to take a citrus addition. Lemon cuts through the tea and adds acidity without requiring milk.

Herbal teas can also pair with lemon, depending on the blend. Adding it after brewing gives you control over how much citrus reaches the cup.

    Coffee Creates a Sharper Combination

Lemon can go into coffee as well, though the pairing is less familiar. Coffee brings roasted bitterness while lemon adds acidity, so the result is sharper than lemon tea.

Start with less than a teaspoon if you want to test the combination. A small amount makes it easier to judge whether the citrus works with the coffee before adding more.

Lemon Juice Adds Some Vitamin C

Citrus fruits are a source of vitamin C, and lemon juice contributes some to the drink. A small splash, however, provides a modest amount rather than an entire day's requirement.

Adults ages 19 to 64 need about 40 mg of vitamin C per day, according to NHS guidance. Fruit and vegetables remain the main way to get it through the diet, so lemon in tea or coffee is an addition rather than a substitute.

Keep the Lemon for Flavor First

Tea and coffee both contribute to daily fluid intake, and adding lemon changes the taste without requiring a separate drink. For anyone who already keeps lemons or lemon juice in the kitchen, it takes one teaspoon to try the combination.

The reason to add it is simple: citrus changes the cup and contributes some vitamin C. Whether it stays in the morning routine comes down to whether lemon works with the tea or coffee you drink.
