Chai means "tea" in India, where the drink originated. Chai refers to the milky black tea flavored with warm spices that's very common there. Each family's recipe is different, but common spices to include are cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, star anise, and sometimes fennel, nutmeg, pepper and coriander.

Tips For Making and Storing The Best Chai Spice Blend
- Check your spices to make sure they aren't old. Spices do have a shelf life. Fresh spices will give you the best tasting blend.
- Taste and adjust to suit your personal preference!
- This recipe for chai spice mix makes enough to fill a normal sized spice jar about halfway full, so make more or less depending on your jar.
- Most glass spice jars can be put in the dishwasher (the lids, too) so it makes it easy to recycle them and use them for your own blends. Just make sure you label your jars!
How To Use Chai Spice
- Of course, you can use this blend to make your own chai latte with black tea, milk, and sweetener of your choice.
- Sprinkle on your morning oatmeal or use in overnight oats or baked oatmeal, like my Pumpkin Chai Baked Oatmeal.
- Blend into smoothies for a delicious flavor, like my Healthy Gut Vanilla Chai Smoothie.

This is an amazing recipe. Thank you
I make something very special with this Chai blend. South African Van der Hum liquor. Basic recipe follows.
One 750 or liter bottle of potstil brandy. Steep with a handful of chai mix in container for a month or more.
Let decoct for some weeks. Minimum four.
Make a sugar solution of one third sugar and two thirds sugar
Filter brandy/herb of chai out. You are left with a delicious steep of alcohol and chai.
Mix two thirds chai and brandy steep with one third sugar solution.
You now have a fabulous liquor invented by European settlers in the southern tip of Africa in the 1700's.
ENJOY!

Thanks for the recipe. I use a thermal coffee carafe. Before I go to bed, I put one heaping teaspoon of chai mixture in carafe and fill with boiling water. Sometimes I also put a green tea bag in. The tea is ready first thing in the morning nice and hot. I put stevia and some half and half in my insulated mug before pouring the tea in. Delicious!

Sounds awesome! So glad you like the recipe!

Can you combine it with tea to make chai tea?
Kaleigh says
You can, but the spices will float to the top of your tea.
Roberto says
Does it disolve well on hot water?
Kaleigh says
Since it's made of spices, it won't really dissolve the way that sugar or salt would.
Gale K Carpenter says
my first try. How much spice blend per cup?
Kaleigh says
Hi Gale,
I'd probably start with 1/4 tsp and increase to suit your taste.

I want to make a chai chia pudding, I purchased clove, cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg. Just need a proper recipe. Thanks so much.
Kaleigh says
Hi Yvonne,
To make chia pudding, the typical ration is about 3/4 cup milk of your choice to 1/4 cup chia seeds, plus about 1 tbsp of sweetener if you like. I'd suggest adding half to 1 tsp of the spice blend.

Thanks! Looking forward to trying this tonight!

So grateful for this recipe! I am using it in my steel cut oats instead of cinnamon. No sweetener required.

Thank you, been buying dry chia tea & adding pumpkin spice mix to it. Taste good, but something missing, it is the cardamom.
