Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

Are you looking for an easy, healthy, and affordable way to add more protein and fiber to your diet? If so, then you should try cooking chickpeas. Chickpeas are a staple in many diets, so learning how to cook them well is essential. And they are easy to cook in the instant pot or on the stovetop.

Why You'll Love Cooking Dry Chickpeas at Home

Cooking dry chickpeas is superior to canned beans in several ways:

  • They tend to be cheaper than canned chickpeas, especially if you buy them in bulk and store them at home. So, if you are looking to save money while still enjoying a delicious and nutritious food, cooking your chickpeas at home is the best option.
  • You can control the amount of salt that is used when preparing the chickpeas. Many canned chickpea products contain large amounts of sodium, which can be unhealthy for your heart and blood pressure. If you cook dry chickpeas at home, you can add fresh herbs and spices to create a more flavorful dish.
  • Many dry beans and peas have a longer shelf-life than canned, which makes them ideal for people who prefer to stock up and keep their pantry well-stocked.
  • Many types of dried beans and peas are organic, whereas canned chickpeas may contain additives or preservatives that you would rather avoid.

Are Chickpeas Healthy?

Chickpeas are a great source of plant-based protein and are packed full of essential nutrients, such as iron, magnesium, and potassium. Chickpeas are also high in fiber, which can help lower cholesterol levels and improve digestive health.

Chickpeas contain phytonutrients, which have antioxidant properties that may help to reduce inflammation in the body. Chickpeas are a great choice for anyone looking for a healthy and nutritious snack or meal option.

  • Add your cooked chickpeas to salads. Or make a bean salad with cooked chickpeas as the base, paired with chopped onion and tomatoes and tossed with a vinaigrette dressing.
  • Roast the chickpeas with your favorite seasonings.
