How Many Cups in a Gallon?

Recipes can be tricky with measurements in gallons, quarts, pints, and cups. How many cups in a gallon? What about the other way around? It can be helpful to know how to make conversions between gallons and cups while cooking or baking.

    cups in gallons

You are probably familiar with the size of a gallon of milk and with the size of a measuring cup, but you may not know how many cups are in a gallon. One gallon equals 16 cups. So if you’re baking something and a recipe calls for 1 gallon of an ingredient, you will need to use 16 cups of that same ingredient.

Converting from gallons to cups is useful when scaling recipes up or down. If a recipe calls for 4 cups of an ingredient and you want to quadruple the recipe, you will need 16 cups which is equal to 1 gallon.

How Many Cups in a Half Gallon?

The conversion from gallons to cups can be helpful when making recipes that require large amounts of ingredients. For example, let’s say a recipe calls for a half gallon of cream. To make this recipe with an 8 fluid ounce measuring cup, you would need 8 cups (16 cups divided in half). So there are 8 cups in a half gallon.

Number of cups = Number of gallons × 16

    Number of cups = 2 × 16
