This homemade Texas style barbecue sauce is thick, a little spicy, a little sweet and a little smoky. Made with no ketchup and no refined sugar, it's the perfect BBQ sauce for all of your summer grilling needs!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tbsp avocado or olive oil (or bacon grease)
  • 1/2 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp chipotle powder
  • 1/2 tsp freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat oil over low heat. Add garlic and onion and cook, stirring, until softened.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and simmer on low about 5 minutes, stirring.
  3. Remove from heat and use an immersion blender to blend sauce until smooth, or let sauce cool to room temperature then pour into a blender and blend until smooth.
  4. Return to pan and turn heat back on low. Let simmer until warmed through.

Notes

Worcestershire sauce usually contains soy sauce, so it has a small amount of gluten. If that is a concern, look for brands made without soy sauce. It also contains anchovies, so it is not vegetarian.
