Harissa Grilled Chicken with Lemon Mint Yogurt Sauce

30 minute, 6 ingredient spicy grilled harissa chicken thighs with a creamy lemon mint yogurt sauce are an easy and delicious dinner option for busy weeknights. (gluten-free, nut-free)

For Chicken:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 3 tsp harissa seasoning
  • 3 tsp avocado oil or other neutral oil
  • 1/2 yellow onion

For Lemon Mint Yogurt sauce:

  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint, finely chopped
  • Pinch freshly cracked black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare yogurt sauce. Stir together yogurt, lemon juice, mint and pepper. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Heat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat (about 375-400°F).
  3. Rub chicken thighs with harissa seasoning and oil.
  4. Cut onion from root to tip, leaving the root intact so that the onion stays together. Lightly oil the cut side of the onion.
  5. Place onion, cut side down, on the grill and cook undisturbed while you grill the chicken.
  6. Sear both sides of thighs for about 2 minutes per side over direct heat. Move to indirect heat or turn heat down and continue cooking until the thickest part of the thighs register at 165°F, about 8-10 minutes.
  7. Remove chicken and onion from grill. Slice onion and serve chicken thighs with prepared sauce and grilled onion.

Notes

  • You can use chicken breast in place of thighs. I recommend butterflying them so that they cook more quickly.
  • You can use harissa paste if that's what you have. Since the paste typically has oil in it already, you really won't need to add any. Just rub the thighs with the paste before grilling.
  • If you have Greek yogurt, thin it with about a tablespoon of cold water or milk.
  • You can use a grill pan or cast iron skillet on the stove for this recipe. Cover the pan when you lower the heat to lock in moisture.
