How to Cook Chickpeas (Stovetop and Instant Pot)

How to cook chickpeas using two different methods, perfectly cooked chickpeas every time!

Ingredients

Scale

    • 1 cup dried chickpeas

    • Water (depending on the method it might vary)

    • ½ teaspoon salt

Optional:

    • 2 bay leaves

    • 2 garlic cloves

Instructions

Soak the chickpeas overnight in enough water to cover them, this will shorten massively the cooking time and also help reduce the anti-nutrients all the legumes have.

Pressure cooker method:

  1. Add the soaked chickpeas to the Instant pot and add 4 cups of water to it.
  2. Add salt, mix well and close the lid.
  3. Cook for 15 minutes under high pressure. Make a quick release whenever finished.

Stovetop method:

  1.  Add the soaked chickpeas to the large pan and cover them with enough water by 2 inches on top.
  2. Bring the water to boil and then lower the heat.
  3. Let cook for 50 minutes.

Notes

If you forget to soak them, you can still cook them using the Pressure cooker method.

If you want to amp up the flavor, add the bay leaves and the garlic (crushed) into the water when cooking.

It’s important to not cook them with soaking water but use fresh water.

Once cooked can be stored in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
