Don’t know where to start in your safer beauty journey? Here are my favorite BeautyCounter products to help you get started!
I started my journey to cleaner, safer beauty products a few years ago after I’d found out that I have a gene mutation that puts me at higher risk for breast cancer, and when Mr. Table and I wanted to try to start a family. As a dietitian, I’ve always believed that what we put into our bodies is important, but it wasn’t until I started looking at the research that I really started to understand that what we put on our bodies is important for health, too. (You can read more about that in this post: Does Safe Beauty Really Matter?)
Frankly, I was shocked at how little the beauty and personal care industry is regulated in the US. Despite the known harmful effects (like possible carcinogen status, hormone disruption, and aggravation of allergies) of some chemicals used in our everyday products, it’s really like the Wild West in the beauty industry. The last time a federal law was passed regulating the cosmetics industry was 1938 – over 80 years ago! There are only 30 banned or restricted ingredients here – compared to over 1,400 in the EU. So it’s really up to responsible companies to formulate their products with consumer safety and health in mind. And it’s up to us to research and choose carefully the products we welcome into our bathroom cabinets and makeup bags.
That’s why I decided that BeautyCounter was right for me and my family. They have a ‘Never List’ of over 1,500 questionable ingredients that you will never find in their products, and they are constantly researching the safety and efficacy of all of their ingredients and products without health in mind. Because let’s be real, there are over 80,000 chemicals used in beauty products and ain’t nobody got time to research them all, all by themselves. Honestly, I never wanted to become a consultant. I wanted to buy the products I loved and leave it at that. But then I was ordering so much of their skincare and makeup that I joined the Band of Beauty program so I could get free shipping and credit back to use toward future purchases (I love a good deal!). Which eventually led me to become a consultant so that I could get discounts on the products I love and trust, and share them with you. It’s been a great decision, knowing I can rest a little easier not worrying about the products I’m putting on my skin.
If you’re new to the clean beauty world, it can be super overwhelming trying to pick out products that are both safe and effective. BeautyCounter products are a great place to start! Here are my favorite products that I currently use (I have oily, blemish-prone skin that now also conveniently has hyper- and hypopigmentation issues thanks to pregnancy!). If you have a different skin type, you can take the skincare quiz to find out which products would be better suited for you, or just send me a message, and I can help!
My Favorite BeautyCounter Products
Countercontrol Clear Pore Cleanser and Toner I had really bad skin as a teen, and it seemed nothing ever worked on the breakouts. Well, guess what?! Pregnancy skin is just as bad. The hormonal rollercoaster that is pregnancy wreaked havoc on my skin. Super frustrating. The Countercontrol collection is actually very effective on my hormonal pregnancy skin – on face, chest, and back! – without being drying. And the best part is that it’s safe. (Just be sure your OB is ok with you using salicylic acid in small concentrations. Some aren’t.)
Overnight Resurfacing Peel Pregnancy skin is fun. I have light, depigmented spots leftover from my first pregnancy, with hyperpigmentation this time around. I love this gentle peel for helping to resurface those spots as well as old acne scars. Since I’ve started using it, I’ve noticed an improvement in the overall smoothness and more even tone of my skin. I love that it’s gentle enough to use 2-3 times a week!
Brightening Facial Oil Another lovely pregnancy skin woe? Dullness. I have dark spots, light spots, dull skin. Very fun, especially when you don’t like to/have time to put on makeup every day. I use this brightening oil as my moisturizer to help even up and brighten my skin tone. Bonus – it has an addicting citrusy scent!
Balancing Charcoal Face Mask I’ve tried a ton of natural/safer face masks and this one is by far the most effective. I use it when my pores are clogged and instantly feel like they are cleaner afterward. I also love the relaxing, minty scent and slight tingle! Get it when you can, it sells out fast!
Touchup Skin Concealer Pen This concealer pen provides the perfect amount of coverage for blemishes and under-eye darkness – no cakey feeling or buildup!
Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer I don’t love the feeling of wearing a foundation all over. It’s just too heavy for me. But now that I need to even out my skin tone, I’ve found it a little more necessary. I love the semi-sheer coverage and lightness of this tinted moisturizer, plus the fact that it has SPF 20! I usually put this on by itself, but if I’m going somewhere and doing a full face of makeup, I’ll wear it with the Touchup Concealer Pen and Mattifying Finishing Powder. If you have dry skin, the Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation is awesome and has buildable coverage (it’s what my mom uses).
Volumizing Mascara A good mascara is hard to find, especially safer versions. This volumizing mascara is awesome! The brush is the best for adding volume and length, and the formula doesn’t run or smudge throughout the day. No raccoon eyes here!
Brilliant Brow Gel I stinkin’ love this stuff. If I don’t put on anything else for this day, this is all I need to feel a little more put together. It holds brows in place and fills them in for a naturally more polished look without a full face of makeup. I use the lightest shade tinted version, and they have a clear version as well if you don’t need to fill in any spot but still want polished brows. I 100% recommend the brow gel!
Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Mist We all know how important SPF is, but most of us still don’t wear it. Besides, traditional versions are leaded with scary chemicals that leave you questioning which is worse – the sunscreen or the sun? I absolutely love this mineral sunscreen mist for everyday sun protection.
